Went here with my folks when I was visiting them in Ann Arbor last month. Got the salad that had chicken, fruit, and nuts. Bit down on a big piece of a pecan shell and boy did that hurt. The manager asked for my name and number and I got a call from a Panera Bread representative a few days later. He apologized and offered to send me a "nice gift certificate" to make up for the problem. But, he requested that I see my dentist first to ensure that there was no serious damage. I saw my dentist when I returned to Los Angeles. Called and told the Panera representative I'd gone to my dentist and that there did not appear to be any permanent damage to my tooth. He said he'd send me a gift certificate. He did. He sent me a gift certificate for $25. The visit to my dentist, at the insistence of the Panera rep, was $87. Poor form on the part of Panera Bread.

Very nice staff members here who always seem genuine and attentive, but this location often seems to have a problem with traffic flow and crowd management, with long lines stretching to the door at nearly all times of the day and an awkward, tight seating area that doesn't leave much room for breathing or looking around. Apparently there is more space downstairs, but I have never ventured down there, and it doesn't sound appealing. Offers the standard Panera menu and seems well - positioned to capture hungry students/U of M folks as they head on or off campus. Wifi signal here is often spotty, so much so that I've given up trying for it.

The food is good and preferred for meetings - however..... Bad catering! Since Cosi closed up, we have turned to this Panera for our catering needs and they are ALWAYS screwing something up. What's worse is the promise to fix it, then not show up with the amendment! Horrible! We will keep using Panera, but not this location. BEWARE!

I like studying at Panera as long as I don't have to use the internet during peak hours, as they limit wifi access to 30 min during lunch time. It feels cozy and they don't play obnoxious music. Recently, I got their Tuesday bagel deal, which is a baker's dozen (13) for ~$7. I've concluded that Panera is a rather pricey cafe, but I believe the quality of their baked goods is above average! I've been working my way through my bagel stash and had a delicious whole wheat one this morning. I could smell the complex mix of grains before I toasted it, and the texture of the different granules in the dough made the bread very natural-tasting. As for the more indulgent varieties, the cinnamon crunch bagel I didn't even need to eat with cream cheese, as it's more like rich a pastry with a brown sugar crumble topping. Perfectly accompanied with a simple glass of milk for dunking. The french toast bagel is also unique to Panera, and similarly suffices if one is striving to be relatively healthy by eating a bagel but really wants a donut. You have to walk outside down a semi-sketch staircase to access the downstairs area, but there is extra seating on the basement level which is nice.

I usually get good quality, well priced food and service at any Panera I go to. I like this one because it's an easy walk from where I work. The bread is excellent, as are the sandwiches upon which they are made. I usually get a half and half (sandwich/soup) and am quite happy with it. Most of the soups are fine, but I found the clam chowder not to be too chowdery. I was surprised at that. I used to stop in for their breakfasts, but find those a bit wanting, especially when compared to their lunch offerings. Coffee is really good, too. Service is usually fast enough, so no problems there. It's a highlight for me.

The past three times I've been to this location they've been out of bread... They've forgotten to put chicken on my chicken salad. The portions are smaller here than at other locations. Lastly, it's not clean.

It's been a little while since I've walked around UM campus much, so I'm not sure how long this Panera has been here . . . but I'll be surprised if it lasts. To be fair, the place has some redeeming qualities. It's a clean, well-lighted place for studying. The service is good as well. I overheard that there is a downstairs, so they have capacity to serve a lot of students hungry for knowledge and nourishment. The problem is that there are plenty of really good sandwich places in Ann Arbor, so you can't be caught half-steppin'. First off, this is the second consecutive time I've been to a Panera where they had run out of ingredients. Furthermore, I ordered a panini, and they just pulled them out of a warming over, pre-made who knows how long ago. Definitely not worth $8 I paid. To add insult to injury, they have a 30-minute time limit on their wifi service! I think the owners of this particular shop probably figured they could get by in a college town by offering below-par food and services. Maybe in Columbus, but not Ann Arbor.

Pros: friendly staff, fast service, very nice location, warm environment of the restaurant, reasonable prices, my wife had bbq chicken salad which was very tasty Cons: my Cesar chicken sandwich was cold one that i really didnot like. The table we sat on was dirty so i think they need to pay more attention to that Overall it was a nice experience and i recommend their Salads

I generally like Paneras, but this one is perpetually crowded, making finding a table a chore. Also, to keep the students out, they "limit" the internet to 30 minutes during peak hours--I haven't seen that at other Paneras, even the one across from North Campus. Combine the long lines with long wait times for the food, and it's an easy decision to choose to go elsewhere for a good study/food spot.

Easily the worst Panera I've been to. I ordered to go. When I opened the sandwich, it was missing most of its ingredients. Just go to the Bruegger's next door.

  • Beck E.

I like Panera (being a fan of St. Louis), but the last time I went here, the cashier was not so friendly. She wasn't unfriendly, per se, but she came off as very strong. It didn't help that there was only one person in line in front of me who had already order and took 3-4 minutes just to pay because she didn't give a rat's behind that someone was in line behind her and proceeded to pack a tiny wallet into a tiny purse into another sac, all the while slowly zipping up a few zippers on each item. Not the store's fault, I guess, but it still detracted from the experience and the cashier didn't do anything to ameliorate the situation.

When I saw this Panera so close to UM's campus, I was really excited at first. I'm one of those silly college kids that doesn't drink coffee or tea, so there are very few places where I can enjoy free wifi and my beverage of choice, pop. So far, every time I have gone to this location it has been super packed and the service has been ridiculously slow. Today I waited about 20 minutes while the register froze. Another point of ridiculousness is that during their peak hours "5 to 7"pm or so, they limit the wifi to about 30 minutes. Sure you can just 'restart' the wifi connection, but it's pretty annoying. The bathrooms are pretty clean, but they're just single rooms, so there's a line usually forming. The food is definitely overpriced for what they give you, but I do love me their sourdough rolls. Big surprise that the one they gave me today was hard as a rock. Next time I'll just go to Brueggers.

The Good: Hey, it's a Panera! On campus! As a chain, I have to say that I think pretty highly of Panera. I've never gotten anything absolutely disgusting here. Now, that may sound like a low bar, but honestly -- I feel like I've been the recipient of f-ups at at least one sad location of other fast-er food/sandwich chains. You can get a pretty darn good salad or soup here for a reasonable price. Watch out for: Long lines. If you head here during the change-over time between classes, especially close to the lunch hour, you might run into a line out the door. This is funny, because if you visit just 15/20 minutes on either side, you'll be fine. It's just a timing thing since they are so close to campus. The Bad: There is a downstairs seating areas, but it's not too appealing. Tables and chairs upstairs are usually full -- you're better getting your food to go, in general. If you thought you were going to eat in while finishing up something using their wifi, think again. My theory is that the wifi is purposefully spotty and the elevator music particularly horrible just to discourage too much lingering. Alternatives: If you're looking for great salads and sandwiches with less of a line and a more reliable wifi connection, try Beanster's in the Michigan League -- I wish I'd discovered it months earlier than I did. If you just want a pretty simple but mega-cheap salad, hit the salad bar at White Market. As far as I can tell, it's the only place in downtown Ann Arbor where you could score a big ol' salad for less than $3!

This is a Panera so you kinda know what to expect, but there are two things that really irk me about this specific one. First, it seems all the employees are in a zombie like trance. No one is happy or excited and i the cashier always seems annoyed to take my order. Second, this store NEVER opens on time in the morning. If your around this area at 7:00 am and think you'll be walking in those doors think again. The food is just what you would expect and the place is clean but they really need to step up their customer service.

  • Ann A.

Just your average Panera - typical chain food, good service, whatever. Unfortunately the only time I would usually come to a chain like this is when I want a comfortable place to study, and not only is this particular Panera usually packed, but the internet is always awful. It's not just the 30-minute sign-off thing someone else mentioned - the connection is horrible and even completely unusable in some areas of the restaurant.

    (2)
  • Deb C.

I heart Panera, but this one is perpetually understaffed. As the other reviewers note, there are always long lines and slow service. The poor staff seem to be working as hard as they can to keep up with the orders. The upstairs seating is usually full, though the downstairs area is just fine, with plentful seating. One huge caveat, though; the doors leading to the downstairs room are very heavy so it's hard to balance tray full o' soup + salad while also trying to open heavy door.

I was pleased that I would be allowed to choose from 2 sandwiches without meat. But, a sandwich, drink and little bag of chips was 9 dollars. 9 dollars! I should have gone to chipotle or something down the street! And the place was packed! I had to go down some weird dungeonous stairs to their basement. I thought I had gotten lost or something. Unpleased!

Your average Panera. I had a chicken panini with chips and was in a time crunch but the panini was made very fast, so that was good. Nice interior, prime location (right on North U near State), and yummy eats. I'll be back here when in the area at some point.

The people who work here clearly need to be retrained. Waited 25 minutes for 3 cups of soup and 1 sandwich. Went up to the cashier who took our order and asked when our meal would be up, as we didn't hear my name and the buzzer we had didn't go off. She said my name wasn't put on our order, though she took it, and the buzzer may have been put under a wrong #. She instructed me to check the pick up area and I spoke to the lady behind the counter. Sure enough, there's my order and I asked to speak to a manager. He was very polite and apologized, replaced our soups (which had gone cold), he even offered us cookies for our inconvenience.

I have had numerous issues at this location when ordering by phone or online such as them forgetting utensils or dressing for salads. This time I did an online order for Rapid Pickup and made sure to check the bag for everything. It was all there. Upon getting home, however, I found that for $1 extra I got 3 tiny slivers of chicken on my Mediterranean Veggie sandwich. Not worth the upgrade. Poor service again
